Michael Huguely Death & Obituary: Madison County locals are grieving the loss of Michael Huguely, a beloved middle school football coach who passed away on Sunday, three days after suffering a stroke. Michael’s unexpected passing has left a vacuum in the hearts of many people, particularly in Richmond, where he was a well-known and beloved figure. Michael Huguely’s influence extended far beyond his 35-year coaching tenure.
A Life of Selflessness and Dedication
Huguely was known for his selflessness; he never met a stranger and was always willing to help others. His mother, Sarah Miller Johnson, recounted a day when Michael invited his football teammates home for supper, demonstrating his dedication to fellowship and community. “When they walked in that door I said, I don’t know if I have enough food, and he said ‘momma, what they want is lasagna, salad, and your butterscotch pie.’”
A Multifaceted Contribution to Community
Michael served as an associate pastor at Elizabeth Missionary Baptist Church and was also a track and field coach at Madison Central High School and Caudill Middle School. His friend, Eric Warford, praised Michael’s unwavering dedication, adding, “I don’t know when he slept because he was always doing something, always helping someone.”
Legacy on the Football Field
Michael and Eric Warford had long explored the idea of coaching together. They finally had their opportunity in 2023 at Caudill Middle School, where they led the squad to the middle school conference title. “To be able to be in his presence every day on the football field, it was something special,” Warford says.
Honoring Michael’s Memory
The passing of Michael Huguely leaves a profound void in Madison County, where his kindness, dedication, and positive influence will be deeply missed. As the community mourns his loss, they also celebrate his legacy of selflessness, compassion, and unwavering commitment to serving others. Michael’s impact on countless lives, both on and off the field, will be remembered and cherished for years to come.
