E coli Death & Obituary: The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has confirmed a tragic death in England linked to the ongoing E. coli outbreak, with lettuce identified as the source.
Confirmation of Fatalities and Spread of Infection
According to the UKHSA, two individuals in England have died within 28 days of contracting the current strain, with one death likely linked to their STEC infection. Both deceased individuals had underlying medical conditions and passed away in May. The outbreak has resulted in 122 hospitalizations, with current case totals at 182 in England, 58 in Scotland, 31 in Wales, and four in Northern Ireland. The UKHSA indicated that cases in Northern Ireland are likely linked to infections acquired in England.
Current Situation and Recent Developments
As of June 25, an additional 19 cases have been reported over the past week, bringing the total number of confirmed infections across the UK to 275. All reported cases displayed symptoms before June 4. Food manufacturers have recalled sandwiches, wraps, and salads sold in major retail chains due to concerns about their connection to the outbreak.
Understanding E. coli and Prevention Measures
E. coli is a diverse group of bacteria commonly found in the intestines of humans and animals. Some strains, like STEC, produce toxins that can cause severe illness. Symptoms include severe and sometimes bloody diarrhoea, stomach cramps, vomiting, and fever. Amy Douglas, incident director at the UKHSA, advised the public on preventive measures such as thorough handwashing and surface disinfection.

Continued Investigation and Response
The UKHSA anticipates further cases as investigations continue, with ongoing sample referrals from the NHS and whole genome sequencing underway. Darren Whitby from the Food Standards Agency emphasized the complexity of the investigation, highlighting collaborative efforts with businesses and local authorities to safeguard consumers.
The UKHSA and related agencies remain vigilant in monitoring the outbreak, urging the public to stay informed and take necessary precautions to prevent further infections.
